Diary, 1789-1791.

This volume contains Tufts' diary for the period 1789 to 1791, including accounts of his travels to New Jersey and Pennsylvania in search of a teaching position. He also traveled to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., to cure an illness. There is an entry in July 1790 stating he made an agreement to study theology under Nathaniel Emmons. Throughout the diary there are references to Tufts doing the will of God.

James Tufts (1764-1841) was the son of William and Margaret Tufts of New Braintree, Mass. He graduated from Brown University in 1789 and completed his theological studies with Nathaniel Emmons (1745-1840) of Franklin, Mass. Tufts was ordained in 1794 and installed as minister to the Congregational Church in Wardsboro, Vt., where he served until his death in 1841. From the description of Diary, 1789-1791. (Unknown).
